The flywheel

When it comes to the flywheel, weight is of the essence. The heavier the flywheel, the more force the user needs to accelerate, but the smoother the movement. Large flywheels are 50 to 60 centimetres in diameter and weigh between 15 and 30 kilograms. The minimum for a round run is a weight of 5 kilograms.

The speed

A limited training program consists of a particular training time and a defined resistance – for example, 45 minutes with 12 watts. In a dynamic training program, the training parameters vary – for instance, from 80 to 140 watts in 10-watt steps every 10 minutes. There is often talk of interval training programs.

Each user has to decide for himself whether preset training programs are necessary. A training program does not use settings that cannot be set manually. Anyone who opts for a foldable ergometer must expect a load capacity of fewer than 100 kilograms.


When using a bicycle ergometer, the knees mustn’t be bent too much during movement, putting a lot of strain on the knee joints. As a rule of thumb, the angle between the upper and lower legs should not be less than 90 degrees in the upper position. Simultaneously, the knees should not be fully extended at the lowest point of the movement. To ensure this, good ergometers offer an adjustable seat height.

It is advantageous if the height of the handle can also be adjusted in addition to the seat. Depending on the length of your arms, it should be roughly level with your belly button. In this way, exercisers can support themselves well on the handle, ensuring even pressure distribution on the feet, buttocks and arms.

What is the difference between an exercise bike and an ergometer?

Is there an ergometer test by Stiftung Warentest?
Stiftung Warentest does not run a specific ergometer test. There is a general exercise bike test that includes five stationary bikes and 13 elliptical machines. The test report dates from 2002 and is no longer up to date.
